A Conversation With VASILY PETRENKO

Vasily PetrenkoAfter seven fulfilling years at the helm of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Vasily Petrenko has extended his contract, his tenure, his commitment, as he puts it, “to eternity”. Another decade in Liverpool is guaranteed taking him past the record of the longest serving Chief Conductor of the orchestra, Sir Charles Groves. Petrenko has had a dramatic effect on both the RLPO and its audience bringing in ever increasing numbers and a much higher percentage of first-timers. The honorary Scouser has even reached out to Liverpool FC with the promise of exciting tunes that aren’t necessarily “You’ll Never Walk Alone”. He’s a keen footballer himself though he won’t swear allegiance to either Liverpool or Everton but rather his home team in St. Petersburg. In this exclusive audio podcast for Sinfini Music Edward Seckerson goes backstage at the soon to be refurbished Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool, to quiz Petrenko on the secrets of his success. They talk repertoire, they talk trust, they talk about Petrenko’s long-held conviction that getting the best from his players and making each concert an “event” which gets people talking and spreading the word has more to do with respect than popularity. Really? Yes, really.
