Join us in the stunning Grade II* listed Great Hall at Bishopsgate Institute as we welcome the acclaimed conductor, pianist and Music Director of The Royal Opera, Antonio Pappano, who will be sharing stories from his illustrious career. Writer and broadcaster Edward Seckerson will act as both fan and sparring partner for this evening of conversation, which promises to be the liveliest of encounters.
Antonio Pappano
Born in London, Pappano moved to the USA at the age of 13. After many years as a rehearsal pianist, in 1987 he made his operatic conducting debut at the Norwegian National Opera, where he was appointed Music Director in 1990. At the age of 32 he was appointed Music Director of La Monnaie, Brussels, where he remained from 1992 to 2002. During this period he made his debuts in Vienna, at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, and at the Bayreuth Festival. He became Music Director of The Royal Opera in 2002 and of the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome in October 2005.
He has made many recordings both as conductor and pianist, most recently of Verdi’s Aida, and presented two widely acclaimed series, Opera Italia and Pappano’s Classical Voices, for BBC television. He received a knighthood in The Queen’s New Year Honours in 2012 and was made a Cavaliere di Gran Croce dell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana in May 2012. In May 2015 he won the Royal Philharmonic Society Gold Medal.
